Cut-off points are approximate. They vary with screen width, app version and font, so keep the key message well inside the first line.

Why the first lines matter

In the feed, most people only see the start of a caption. Instagram shows roughly the first 125 characters or two lines before it adds "more", and LinkedIn shows about three lines before "see more". Everything after that is hidden until someone taps. If your hook, offer or call to action sits below the cut, most of your audience never reads it.

This preview shows where each network is likely to cut your text, counting both characters and line breaks. Line breaks matter more than people expect: a caption that opens with an empty line or a list can hit the cut-off after just a few words. Threads works differently, showing the whole post up to its 500-character limit, so the preview warns you when the text is too long instead.

Use it to test two or three openings and keep the one that makes sense on its own. In Flomixy, the composer lets you tailor the caption per network, so the Instagram version can lead with the hook while the LinkedIn version adds context.

Questions

About 125 characters, or the first two lines if the caption has line breaks earlier. The exact point depends on screen width.
LinkedIn usually shows around three lines, which is roughly 210 characters on desktop and fewer on mobile.
Threads shows the whole post in the feed, up to its 500-character limit. Longer text has to be split into a thread.
No. It is an approximation based on typical cut-off points. Fonts, screen sizes and app updates change where the cut falls.

Tailor the opening line for each network.
